PROPHILAX - COITO ERGO SUM (2008)

"The following things" are missing in the new Coito Ergo Sum (2008)....

....it's an album that may disappoint some longtime fans but capture new ones. Prophilax has lost its edge (whether intentionally or not), as most of the album doesn’t reach the power of the old works. However, technically and musically it is at very high levels. At the end of the listen, only confusion remains, and 2 or 3 songs make you want to listen again (at least for me), a longtime fan, no matter how open-minded, will wonder where the comedic inventiveness and originality have gone, where characters like: Marino Sumo, Zio Panello, Nonno Pippo, Dora, Cagatone Joe, Don Mignotte, etc. (hilarious characters that have always accompanied Prophilax) have ended up.... While it is mostly possible that in the songs purely dedicated to denunciation and controversy, there is a certain weakness, it is very serious the lack of originality, flatness, and ineffectiveness of a good part of those pieces purely dedicated to the comedy of this disc. In a final analysis, there is an album quite lacking in inspiration but rich from a musical point of view (thank goodness), if I had to evaluate it compared to the Italian musical scene I would give it a 200%, but I feel obligated to compare it to the quality to which Prophilax has accustomed us in the past, therefore I give it a 65%.

1) GAG(s)

The first track is one of the many funny sketches that have always accompanied Prophilax's songs...always appreciated, there is one about every 2 songs, I will not report them.

2) VIVI E LASCIA CHIAVARE:

It has something of "Fotturion" in the intro and then a mix of various previous songs, the music is not bad, Sbhor's guitar never disappoints. However, the song barely makes you smile, and it's not very original. The refrain is powerful but only that.

3) CLERO TTURA DE COJONI:

The music is excellent and energetic, with notable guitar solos; it's the first time Prophilax dedicates an entire song to the attack on the Church, the song has NOTHING comedic (ok, the album is more engaged) and after a while it becomes monotonous, and you change track.

5) SILICOJONE

A Hard-Rock piece with a "classic" sound, very pleasant, unlike the previous one, it makes you laugh but doesn't "take off", you don't reach those climaxes of vulgar comedy, although "BUTTOCKS STOLEN FROM PORNOGRAPHY" stays in mind! This is enjoyable to listen to again.

7) TI ANO

A ballad like "Viva La F**a" (Fifth Excrement), decidedly inferior in terms of comedy (and no, the engagement variable doesn't matter here, it's about anal sex, neither politics nor church), although the duet with the female voice is quite interesting, nothing special, the music is beautiful, a "real" ballad would have benefitted more from it. I'm sure live it gives more, fused with the emotion of a concert.

8) MANDAMI IN RADIO COL BEEP

A smooth and catchy piece, lends itself to repeated listening and is one of my favorites but doesn't seem almost like Prophilax, (REFLECTION: it's a piece clearly monstrously superior to any work of Gem Boy, another humorous group, but if they decommercialized a bit and had a pinch more talent they could very well make a song like this, do you understand?). It criticizes censorship and commercial music on the radio, but it's a flat piece and ironically it's one of the few pieces that could actually be broadcast on the radio (&is this perhaps their intention? And who can blame them).

10) BIG BAMBOO

At the beginning (and not only) a bit of funky, very pleasant, and then immediately a particularly expressive riff kicks off and then follows a half-rap-like singing (as in "NO SEG" album: The Lord of the Sewers) punctuated by a decisive rhythmic guitar, and then a short, powerful, and HILARIOUS refrain (finally) "Ooooh BIG BAMBOO...etc", YES here the real Prophilax has returned from the Anal dimension with the Mentulatore, you don't even need special profanities and exaggerations to make this part hilarious. The song then continues with the female voice, very skillful and vulgar in playing the horny girl looking for the BIG BAMBOO, here the "strategic" vulgarity combined with the comedic effect is at the levels of the old successes. Perhaps the best piece in the album, immediate and smooth.

12) FRATE N' KIAPPETTO

Decidedly a metal piece (very well!), oh my another piece against the Church but this time it makes you laugh and flows smoothly, nothing exceptional but definitely a Prophilax-branded piece (at least Prophilax Post Fifth Excrement)

13) ALTRI CA**I STESSI CULI

A slow song, aimed at criticism against the Italian political caste, necessary in an "engaged album", well done and rational, there's nothing to laugh about (at most smile) and it's right that it is so, here Prophilax shows great maturity, this song certainly does not belong to the Porno Rock genre.

15) STRONZEMON

A song aimed at making you laugh with very modest results, talks about horrible little monsters called Stronzemon loved by children watching the cartoon, rather than a criticism against television (Pokemon- Stronzemon) and against the brainwashing that mass media practice on children through TV, it seems just a playful song closer to "Mongolius" (Fifth Excrement), the piece seems weighed down by electronic vocal filters but in the final analysis it’s hard to imagine it without them.

16) CASA CHIUSA

A Metal song, empty and banal on all fronts, it’s hard to reach the end of the track, just a filler.

18) ME SCARICO TUTTO

Praise of piracy against the tyranny of high music and film prices, the idea is cute but unfortunately the song is a bin of monotony, it doesn't make you laugh, it doesn't make you think, it serves no purpose.

20) S.P.E.R.M.A.

"Listen to Uncle, you'll win strong.....DRINK S.P.E.R.M.A......I drink it too with Uncle". Sperma as a "beauty cream" to be drunk by women who want to stay forever young, very profilaxesco, it's quite funny! It would stand out if it wasn't so flat between refrain and refrain, I wouldn’t want to repeat myself but also here you miss the good old days.

22) FIGLI DI CANI

"City wardens sons of bitches", a Hard-Rock/Metal song against city wardens, much smoother than the previous one but it feels like little, ZERO originality, it doesn't make you laugh, it doesn't do anything, even though the final refrain is GASANTISSIMO especially the final one!

23) VIVO COL GAY

Another medium-speed melodic with two voices, what a drag, but strangely it’s more powerful than most of the above pieces (from #13 onwards), it talks about a gay man who left the girl, but is it a Prophilax song?? Ok, there are two or three profanities, but what's the point? What's it about? It's flat, it doesn't make you laugh, and what does it denounce? Prejudices? Maybe but it's not clear.
