How much I love my little used CD shop. Unfortunately, it is now leaning almost entirely towards new items. New technologies lead to less and less CD purchases and consequently the second-hand market is becoming less and less thriving. Despite this, I still manage to find something, and just yesterday this EP from that prankster Les Claypool's band ended up in my hands.
Let's start by saying that it's an album consisting of seven covers plus two live tracks. Moreover, there are special features, including the splendid video of The devil went down to Georgia".
The album is from 1998 and on drums is Brian Mantia.
The best-done cover is certainly "The family and the fishing net" by Peter Gabriel, but "Behind my camel" by The Police isn't bad at all either. On the other hand, I wasn't very convinced by "The thing that should not be" by Metallica.
Furthermore, Primus self-reference themselves in a darker version of "Too many puppies," and Claypool gives his best in "Silly putty" by the great Stanley Clarke.
The two live tracks are the always excellent "Tommy the cat" and "Bob's party time lounge," recorded at the Kaiser Auditorium on New Year's Eve '98.
What can I say, not an essential album, but certainly a gem for fans of one of the best bands on the planet.
