THE REVIEW

1994, third album of the Praxis project by Bill Laswell and Buckethead, always accompanied by Brain, a drummer as blunt and essential as his name. Unlike the first two albums, this time they do without guests and do everything by themselves.

The three elements react musically in the form of slow and meditated combustion. The result of the reaction would seem to come from more elements; indeed, into the self-generated flame are thrown plentiful samples and overdubs. The coloration of the combustion never reaches those warm yellow-orange tones, but an artificial blue-green. The reaction burns slowly, generating more heat than light with a few small illuminating bursts.

The residual material is unfortunately a small percentage of the total; the process indeed has produced a high index of heavy fumes dispersed in the atmosphere. Among what remains are found sharp and glossy guitar shards with thin filaments neatly tangled and fragile to the touch; considerable quantities of greasy bass materials that often blend everything together and at other times isolate themselves in the form of small resinous droplets; negligible traces of festive metallic dust.

In conclusion, it seems that the experiment did not succeed in the best possible way. Of the complex initial molecules, few significant residues remain, more appreciated for their compactness and high specific weight, typical characteristics of heavy metals.

Burn-zot!

Summary by Bot

Praxis' 1994 album Metatron, the trio's first without guest musicians, delivers a slow-burning, heavily layered experimental sound. The blend of samples, overdubs, and instrumental interplay creates a complex atmosphere marked by heavy textures and occasional standout moments. Despite its ambition, the album sometimes feels weighed down by excess, leaving a mixed impression overall. The reviewer appreciates the compactness and density of some tracks but concludes the experiment doesn't fully succeed.
