The Profile

Praxis is an American experimental collective led by bassist/producer Bill Laswell, formed in 1992. With a rotating lineup featuring collaborators such as Buckethead, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Brain, John Zorn, and Yamatsuka Eye, Praxis merges funk, dub, metal, ambient, and avant-jazz across studio and live releases.

Founded and directed by Bill Laswell. Debut album: Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) in 1992 with Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Buckethead, and Bryan "Brain" Mantia, plus Nathaniel Hall (af next man flip). Sacrifist (1994) features John Zorn, Yamatsuka Eye, and Mick Harris. Metatron (1994) is a trio set with Laswell, Buckethead, and Brain, without outside guests.

Praxis is Bill Laswell’s experimental collective fusing funk, dub, metal, ambient, and free jazz. Reviews cover the 1992 debut Transmutation, the ferocious 1994 Sacrifist with guests like John Zorn and Yamatsuka Eye, and the trio-focused Metatron (1994) with Laswell, Buckethead, and Brain. One reviewer hails Sacrifist’s “sound terrorism,” another finds Transmutation adventurous yet approachable, while Metatron gets a cooler reception.
