I've already written it and I've already said it many times: 1993 was a terrifying, disturbing, lethal year in terms of the record releases labeled Death Metal and similar genres. From memory, now fallible but not too much, I remember Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Pestilence, Atheist, Sepultura, My Dying Bride, Cynic, Entombed, Dismember, Katatonia, Anathema. All works that greatly contributed to damaging my auditory system (and not just that system...). And among these devastations, we must also include the sound terrorists Pitch Shifter who released, under the secure guidance of the label "Earache Records", their second full-length work.

They formed in Nottingham in 1989, led by the very young Clayden brothers. They released their first raw, and not yet fully focused, Industrial in 1991; then came the Industrial-Death masterpiece Submit of the following year. A mini album that for me remains their peak not reached again, not even by Desensitized.

We are faced with a concept album about the dehumanization of human society with a very specific purpose: to reduce everyone to slavery.

Twelve tracks with some short spoken snippets lasting a few seconds.

With an increasing use of sound experimentation; the sampled, electronic parts increase exponentially.

They rely on a human drum that is squared, sharp, dry, hammering.

It's the imperious, omnipresent, cyclical sound of a bass that dictates the initial plots of every single song; deafening guitar noises with low tones à la Godflesh are added in the siderurgic crucible. The voice of one of the two Clayden brothers approaches in some moments that of the prophet Al Jourgensen of Ministry. Overwhelming, important terms of comparison for an album that offers few moments of respite.

A continuous, incessant pounding with a successful attempt to give an "easy listening" imprint compared to the sulfurous mini LP of the previous year.

They would continue their career almost completely abandoning Death-Industrial; Dub and electronic loops would become the main ingredients of the other albums released thereafter. It will never be the same for me.

Ad Maiora.
