THE REVIEW

First review. Which album to choose? Italian or foreign artist? Emerging or veteran?...

I said to myself "Well, who cares if it has already been reviewed and if it doesn't top the charts (and if it's also Italian)", but Pier Cortese with his debut album "Contraddizioni" can be more than fine. After these, perhaps unnecessary, premises, let's begin.

Pier Cortese is one of the leading figures of the new Roman line of Singer-songwriters (which includes among others: Cristicchi, Pari, Marco Fabi, Angelini and the veteran Niccolò Fabi) who in my humble opinion, has something to say in a music industry that is increasingly invaded by "beautiful people".

Cortese's album is simple but never trivial. The arrangements are influenced by Sakamoto (and here and there by Battisti) and the lyrics are never predictable. The tracks I would highlight would be all 14 tracks (plus the splendid covers of "Emozioni" by Battisti and the revisited "Music" by Madonna) that make up the CD; however, I cannot help but highlight the beauty of "Dimmi come passi le notti" and "Canzone silenziosa". The latter, whether you like it or not, is one of the most beautiful songs the Italian scene has offered us in recent decades. On the radio, for a while, "Souvenir" was heard (one of the more "normal" pieces of the album) which nevertheless has the merit of having introduced Pier and, in a certain sense, having taken him out of the niche. Too bad for SanRemo; excluded after the first night with the track "Non ho tempo". But you know, there it's all one big feast... it would have been better if he hadn't participated at all! The album closes with the emotional "Sentimento Maleducato" another track with a meticulously crafted arrangement that I would recommend to those who listen to music "regardless of...."

I hope this review serves (besides accumulating a substantial number of Critiques) to entice some to at least give a listening chance to an album that truly deserves it.

"...everything is as natural as mineral water that refreshes the wait...."

Summary by Bot

Pier Cortese's debut album Contraddizioni emerges as a refreshing and well-crafted work in the Italian singer-songwriter landscape. With influences from Sakamoto and Battisti, the album offers rich arrangements and poetic lyrics. Standout tracks include 'Dimmi come passi le notti' and 'Canzone silenziosa,' the latter hailed as one of Italy's finest recent songs. Though overlooked at Sanremo, the album deserves wider attention for its authenticity and emotional depth.

The album is not a masterpiece, but you can feel that Cortese has talent and above all passion, which makes this record special.

'The Silent Song', the 'free' song… of those who don’t need to shout to convey something, of those who know how to whisper, or use silence.
