Philip Roth (March 19, 1933 – May 22, 2018) was an American novelist known for exploring Jewish identity and American life in a body of celebrated novels.

Born in Newark, New Jersey; won the Pulitzer Prize for American Pastoral (published 1997, awarded 1998); Nemesis (2010) was announced by Roth in 2012 as his last novel; died May 22, 2018.
