The Profile

Pennywise is an American punk rock band formed in 1988 in Hermosa Beach, California. Known for fast, melodic hardcore and socially conscious lyrics, they helped define 90s skate punk on Epitaph Records. Founding bassist Jason Thirsk died in 1996; Randy Bradbury joined thereafter. Their anthem “Bro Hymn” is a staple of punk singalongs.

Origin: Hermosa Beach, California; Label association: Epitaph Records; Core members: Jim Lindberg (vocals), Fletcher Dragge (guitar), Byron McMackin (drums), Randy Bradbury (bass); Notable song: “Bro Hymn”; Key albums include About Time (1995), Full Circle (1997), Unknown Road (1993), Land of the Free? (2001), From the Ashes (2003), The Fuse (2006), All or Nothing (2012).

DeBaser’s nine Pennywise reviews paint the band as pillars of 90s melodic hardcore: fast, melodic, and socially minded. About Time is hailed as a career peak; Full Circle channels catharsis after Jason Thirsk’s death and elevates Bro Hymn into a global punk anthem. Unknown Road and From the Ashes earn strong praise; Land of the Free? splits opinions. Overall tone: reverent with occasional tough love.
