The Profile

Pan Sonic were a Finnish electronic duo formed by Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen, active from 1993 to 2009. Originally known as Panasonic until a late-1990s name change, they became known for stripped-down, high-impact minimalism blending analog and digital methods, often using custom-built gear. Vainio died in 2017.

Finnish duo (Mika Vainio, Ilpo Väisänen); originally named Panasonic before adopting Pan Sonic; active 1993–2009; core styles include minimal techno, experimental electronic, ambient, industrial and noise; used custom-built instruments (including devices assembled with Jari Lehtinen).

Four reviews explore Pan Sonic’s austere electronics: a chilly debut (Vakio), a divisive marathon (Kesto), a black-hole of refinement (Gravitoni), and an intense Rome set. The duo’s analog–digital tension, custom gear, and sinusoid-on-screen stage signature recur. Opinions range from harsh to ecstatic, but the craft remains unmistakable.
