Simon Boccanegra is a character I adore. He was a pirate. That time has passed. But he's seen it all in life. He has a daughter, whom he lost (and will find again). They make him governor of Genoa. He doesn’t really know how to do anything. But he doesn’t say no. He finds himself in a terrifying environment. Intrigues, plots, uprisings. His best friend who will betray him. And he does nothing. Throughout the whole opera, he does nothing but put his face out there. There’s a revolt going on. He has the doors opened, lets everyone in. He’s not afraid of anyone. But not out of bravado.
