Out of personal curiosity (and partly for fun), I’m launching a little early-year survey:
what are some works — of any genre and length — by musicians you generally don’t like, but that, in one or a few rare cases, you find you really enjoy?
I’m not talking about guilty pleasures (I despise the concept and the connotations that come with it), but music you genuinely like, without irony or indulgence. For example: “I basically don’t care for anything X does, but I really like the song Y/the album Z is just awesome.” Or: “I’d gladly and with considerable satisfaction toss out the entire corpus mensurabilis musicae of this person, but I happily keep and listen to Q, which surprises even me.”
You might like them because they break a bit from their creator’s usual style, because you find them particularly well done, or for completely personal and inexplicable reasons (even to yourself).
