David Alan & Stephen Batt, Andonis Michaelides, and Richard Barbieri formed JAPAN in 1974. They broke up eight years later due to various disagreements, only to reunite one last time in 1991 to record a single album, "Rain Tree Crow," which gave its name to the new band.
This "Tin Drum" from 1981 was their 5th studio album, recorded before their split the following year (talk about "cherchez la femme"—it seems that due to personality conflicts that led to growing tensions within the group, the long-standing differences between the band members reached their peak when Mick Karn's girlfriend moved in with David Sylvian).
