Shortly before the boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla set off from Genoa, the Genoese dockworkers of Calp took a very strong stand in support and protection of the mission for Gaza, promising to block every single Israeli container passing through any port in case of an armed attack by the army.
“Around mid-September, these boats will arrive near the coast of Gaza, in the critical area. If we lose contact with our boats, our comrades, even for just 20 minutes, we will shut down Europe. Together with our union Usb, together with all dockworkers, together with the whole city of Genoa. From this region, 13-14 thousand containers leave every year for Israel. We won’t let even a single nail leave anymore. We will launch an international strike, we will block the roads. We will block everything. Our girls and boys must come back without a scratch, and all our goods, which belong to the people, down to the very last box, must get where they are meant to go.” What the Genoese dockworkers are doing for Gaza and for this mission is something that goes beyond any activism and any simple political act.
Only one word comes to mind, which perfectly captures both Genoa and the dockworkers.
