Once Renzo Arbore used to say those who drink beer live to a hundred... now there is no more religion!
Are the fluoride levels in Ichnusa beer safe?
Ichnusa, now owned by the Heineken group, is still produced in Assemini, in the province of Cagliari, next to the Fluorsid industrial plant. The area, contaminated with fluorine, arsenic, sulfates, and heavy metals, is classified as a Site of National Interest. The pollution in the area has also impacted livestock: in the past, industrial discharges were directed straight into the pond near the sheepfolds, causing the death of up to 100 sheep per year. In 2022, the documentary Chemical Bros reported analyses on bulk Ichnusa beer, with 27 mg/l of fluoride, against a legal limit of 1.5 mg/l in drinking water. We went back on site to check if the situation has improved.
