In 1975 I was ten years old. That year marked the thirtieth anniversary of the Liberation, and at Public School, with a teacher who, although bearded in accordance with the fashion of the time, was certainly not a dangerous internationalist Trotskyist, he used some hours of the ministry's curriculum to
a) take us to visit the nearby Sacrario del Martinetto, the old shooting range of our city, a place where over 60 partisans were executed by the fascist republicans in the years 1943-44. Among those who met their death were eight members of the first nucleus of the Piementese CLN: local heroes by the names of Giuseppe Perotti, Eusebio Giambone, Franco Balbis, Enrico Giachino, Paolo Braccini, Giulio Biglieri, Massimo Montano, and Quinto Bevilacqua, and each of them has the honor of a street named in their memory in liberated Turin.
b) use some lesson hours to read to us excerpts from the 'Letters of the Condemned to Death of the Italian Resistance', freshly published by Einaudi.
There, that was the world fifty years ago.
Today, we talk about celebrating, but let’s be sure to do it 'with moderation'.
