Blue Dirge builds on the insights of Gone Away, the fantastic debut album that's now six years old, and sharpens the aggression to turn the Beguiled into a sort of garage-punk and Cramps-inspired version of the Jesus Lizard. The chords have a metallic and genuinely twisted quality, like the scene of a highway accident.
The Beguiled churn out a sequence of hellish and murky riffs, with a whole new ferocity, as if they had been without a hot meal for all these years while keeping to themselves and had literally resorted to gnawing on their private record collection just to feed themselves.
Tracks like The Bloody Soul, Fire Rock – That Nagging Voice, The Screaming Rummy, She-Devil Rock, Kitten with a Whip, and the voodoo dance of I Walk Alone are irritating flintstones on which to fry your flesh, in the absence of anything else.
