Tho se who are dear to the gods die young...
Massimo Riva (1963-1999), guitarist, pianist, singer-songwriter.
A native of Zocca, founder of the Steve Rogers Band, backing guitarist for Vasco Rossi and author of many of his hits, he leads the unruly life of a rocker, both local and beyond, filled with alcohol, women, heroin, sleepless nights, and distortion... Rock'n'roll in the most logical and classic sense of the term, in short.
Cause of death: Cardiac arrest resulting from a heroin overdose. He was found dead at his home in the center of Bologna, where he lived, alone as always, still with the syringe stuck in his vein.
He wasn't exactly a heroin addict, rather a hyperactive aficionado of life, caught in mood swings that drained him. That street-bought dose was perhaps too pure.
He is buried in Zocca, in the municipal cemetery.
A music school in Zocca bears his name, established by Vasco Rossi.
