The music of Modern English is a manual of all the contaminations and evolutions of a certain type of new wave: sharp post-punk, martial synth-pop, and occasionally fine strokes of psychedelia. A flagship band of 4AD, they strongly characterized the early period of the label, with some of its members participating in that fantastic project called This Mortal Coil.
The artwork of Mesh & Lace, created by the graphic studio 23 Envelope, is masterful, placing a moving body at the center of attention, an idea of dynamics and evolution that is parallel and complementary to the band's musical conception, much like in Garlands by the Cocteau Twins.
