The state is a product of society that has reached a certain stage of development; it is the confession that this society has wrapped itself in an insurmountable contradiction with itself, that it has split into irreconcilable antagonisms that it is powerless to eliminate.
But in order for these antagonisms, these classes with conflicting economic interests, not to destroy themselves and society in a futile struggle, there arises the necessity of a power that appears to be above society, which mitigates the conflict, keeping it within the limits of "order"; and this power that emanates from society, but positions itself above it and increasingly estranges itself from it, is the State.

Friedrich Engels (The origin of the family, private property and the State)
