"Dear comrades, yes, comrades, because it is a beautiful and ancient name that we must not let fall into disuse; it derives from the Latin «cum panis», which unites those who eat the same bread. Those who do so also share existence, with all that it entails: joy, work, struggle, suffering. It is much more beautiful to say comrades than comrades-in-arms, as those who frequent the same place to sleep are called, or even fellow soldiers, who are the companions in arms. We of the Resistance are comrades, because we did indeed share bread when we were hungry, but we have also lived together the bread of freedom, which is the hardest to conquer and maintain. Today, as Primo Levi said, we have a warm home and our bellies are full; the problem of existence seems resolved, and we sit down to doze off in front of the television. Alert comrades! It is not the time to take up arms again but to keep our minds armed, yes, and the weapon of reason is harder to wield than violence. Let us reflect on what has been and not allow ourselves to be flattered by a civilization that offers everyone ever more beautiful cars... Other problems plague our society: peace, certainly, but also work for all, the freedom to access education, a peaceful old age; not just selfishly for ourselves, but for all citizens as well. Thus in the fundamental principles of our Constitution born from the Resistance. May my greetings reach you, comrades of the National Association of Italian Partisans, and may Resistance live on forever. Yours, Mario Rigoni Stern"
