Already the architect of the Sam Gopal Dream, Sam Gopal, a quirky English percussionist, formed a band in 1968 that inherited acid ingredients and hippie ideals, enriching them with nods to Cream and Hendrix. In 1969, the group released the album Escalator, under Gopal's name, but it was primarily the work of guitarist and singer Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister (future leader of Motörhead), "written in one night, under the influence of methedrine."
