According to the biblical account, Jephthah, a judge of Israel, frees the Israelites from the oppression of the Ammonites through a vow, namely to offer as a burnt sacrifice to God the first one who would come out of his house to meet him.
The first to come out is his daughter, who accepts her fate, asking her father only to be allowed to wander in the mountains (to weep for her virginity) for two months before the sacrifice.
