10°:Gommapiuma, by Giorgio Poi
In fact, this was supposed to be a tie with Semplice by Motta, but I preferred to give more space to this album: while I found Semplice by Motta to be a good but somewhat anonymous and formulaic singer-songwriter album, I found Gommapiuma to be an excellent indie album that demonstrates the genre is not totally trash. Yes, there is a bit of formulaic quality in this album as well, but it has many other pros: musically it is outstanding, Giorgio Poi knows how to create some pretty nice sound interweavings. The tracks are all in the good/ok limbo, I can't mention them all because I would be repeating myself too many times, but some noteworthy ones are: I pomeriggi, a very interesting and successful single, Gommapiuma, an excellent instrumental, and Supermercato, which references Supermarket by Battisti while adapting it to the current context. Although the lyrics are somewhat what the indie market wants, Gommapiuma is definitely an interesting album that everyone should at least give a listen to just out of curiosity. It's not groundbreaking, but it deserves a lot.
The gem: Supermercato
