The Clarification of Knowledge Above all else, I learned to appreciate the value of laziness. For a man full of vitality, acquiring it takes a lifetime of work. Once one has savored its sweetness, it is impossible to detach from it, even if it costs continuous struggle. I too then sought to immerse myself for hours in the contemplation of stones, flowers, animals, and men. My visual power became sharpened, just as my sense of smell and hearing already were. Then came great days, and I discovered a new face of the Dream world. The senses, refined, gradually influenced and modified the mental apparatus. I gained a surprising capacity for wonder. Every object, detached from its relationship with other things, took on new meaning. The fact that any body came to me from eternity made me shiver. The fact that a thing was exactly as it was, and not otherwise, filled me with amazement. One day, in front of a shell, I realized with utmost clarity that its way of existing was not as deaf as I had thought until that moment. Soon the same happened to everything, to the whole world. At first, the most intense sensations came to me just before falling asleep or right after waking, when the body was tired and life, within me, was in a twilight state. A world, not always alive, had to be continuously recreated, and always new. I increasingly felt the common bond that existed in all things. Colors, smells, sounds, and tastes were interchangeable for me. And then I understood: The world is imagination force, imagination-force. A. Kubin, L’altra parte, Adelphi, 2006, p. 155.
