#versigiusti (part 3 of 4) (Giuseppe Giusti. Published and unpublished verses. Florence, Felice Le Monnier, 1852.)
What does Your Excellency want? The piece is beautiful,
Then ours, and then played as it goes;
And with the art in between, and with the mind
Given to art, the obligations are cast away.
But once it ceased, inside, so beautifully
I returned to being, as one knows;
When here you are, to deal me another blow,
From those mouths that seemed like dormice,
A slow slow German hymn
For the sacred air to God moved its feathers:
It was a prayer, and it seemed to me like a lament,
Of a grave, feeble, solemn sound,
Such that I still feel it in my soul:
And I wonder that in those fabrics,
In those exotic wooden puppets,
Harmony could reach that extent.
I felt in the hymn the bitter sweetness
Of songs heard as a child: the heart
That learns it from the domestic voice,
Repeats them to us in days of sorrow:
A sad thought of the dear mother,
A longing for peace and love,
A dread of distant exile,
That made me go into raptures. Falco - Der Kommissar (Official Video)
