When Virgin signed them a check for £50,000 in 1982, many believed that the Pale Fountains would stay on the scene for a long time. Indeed, “Pacific Street,” their debut album, received enthusiastic reviews. However, heroin shattered the Liverpool formation. But what happened to the band members? The British monthly “Q” went to investigate. Nathan McGough, the percussionist, left just before the contract with Virgin and ended up managing the Happy Mondays. Now he is the manager of Shack, the group that features his former bandmate, guitarist John Head. Johnny Mellor, the percussionist who took his place, is now among the managers of The Magnet venue in Liverpool. Michael Head, singer and guitarist, admits to having lost all his possessions (about 450 million lire) due to drugs and says that now all he has left are “two albums and a guitar.” Chris McCaffrey, the bassist, died suddenly in 1989. Thomas “Jock” Whelan, the drummer, lives in Liverpool and works as a taxi driver.
