How many double duos in rock? Let’s say, off the top of my head: Mamas & Papas, Ricchi e Poveri, and Abba. All pretty well-known, right? (Oh yes, even Ricchi e Poveri were and are celebrities in all of Russia) Well, here we're a bit below in terms of notoriety. They were called Zeitgeist and a couple of releases in the mid-Eighties under that name (especially the splendid debut ‘Translate Slowly’) created a tiny, tiny cult of followers among all the REM-epigones located on both coasts of the Union, even though here we are in sunny Texas, Austin to be precise. Then, the usual primogeniture already registered by others forced them to change their name, and how delightful it was to find them a couple of years later as Reivers ('the raiders' from Faulkner) and this splendid 'Saturday', which even attracted the attention of Capitol, because college rock had broken through and everyone wanted a piece of the pie. This mix of guitar-driven rock and exquisite intersexual vocal harmonies, always entwined with melodies capable of clinging to the eardrums like tenacious ivy, remains for me a glorious mystery as to why it didn’t make them global stars.
