Orgosolo, on May 27, 1969, an announcement was posted on the walls of the town by the authorities, inviting the shepherds operating in the Pratobello area to move their livestock elsewhere because, for two months, that area would be used as a shooting and training range for the Italian Army. On June 9, 3,500 citizens of Orgosolo began mobilization; on the 18th of the same month, the town's population gathered in Piazza Patteri: from the assembly emerged the decision to implement a form of nonviolent protest and thus to peacefully occupy the Pratobello location. On June 19, the occupation began, and after a few days, during which no episodes of violence occurred, the army abandoned the drills and withdrew. Following these events, the phenomenon of muralism was born in the barbaricino center, and these events were remembered as an example of revolt and democratic sovereignty of the Sardinian people.
