The first lineup is called The Boy Hairdressers and releases a single, Golden Showers (1988), which does not achieve the hoped-for success. The disappointing debut leads to a reshuffle in the lineup: the singer-guitarists Norman Blake and Raymond McGinlay are soon joined by the singer-bassist Gerard Love, an urban planning student at the University of Glasgow, followed by drummer Brendan O'Hare. The band changes its name to Teenage Fanclub.
