Oppression, marginalization, and social injustices shape and unify culturally diverse peoples in the class struggle. What has served as a vehicle of dissent and a break from the patterns and mental cages of a racist and xenophobic society for Black communities in America has, in the new millennium, become the same vehicle adopted by the Palestinian people: Rap. Arab-American director Jackie Reem Salloum produced a documentary in 2008 about the Palestinian hip hop scene titled “Slingshot Hip Hop,” where the awareness that this new and powerful weapon, charged with the power of words, is an extraordinary means of responding to fascist-Israeli forms of oppression and affirming Palestinian identity clearly emerges.
