A former colleague of mine was Egyptian. After twenty years in Italy, he returned to his homeland, and during the disembarkation procedures, the Egyptian government scrutinized his finances: "You've been away for 20 years; you must have earned 'X'; you owe us taxes of 'Y'." When he returned to Italy, the first thing he did was to apply for Italian citizenship. I’ll skip over the uncivil comments he still directs toward his country of origin.
