"I absolutely loved Monk's piece, 'Round Midnight and I wanted to learn how to play it. So every evening, after I played it, I would go to Monk and ask him, 'How did I do tonight?' And he, all serious: 'Not good.' The next night, the same thing, and the night after, for several nights. He would tell me, 'That's not how you play it,' sometimes with an exasperated and wicked look on his face. Then one night I asked him again and he said, 'Yes, that's how you play it.'
