Filmed between the former Buon Cammino prison and the sea of Cagliari, Il clan dei Ricciai is the latest work by Sardinian filmmaker Pietro Mereu and tells the story – and redemption – of a group of ex-prisoners who now make a living by fishing sea urchins during the coldest and harshest months of the year.

When they slice through the waves in their black wetsuits, they resemble a foreign legion commando, and when they speak, trimming fish heads or drinking "filu e ferru" on a boat, they once again confirm that Sardinians are, alongside the ethnic groups of the Balkans, the last great people of storytellers left in Europe.
