Mary Shelley, born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin.

Author of the infamous "Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus" published in 1818.

In 1814, Mary fell in love with Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was already married to Harriet Westbrook at the time.

Mary fled to France with Percy, and after traveling across Europe together, they had to return to England due to lack of money to survive.

Mary was expecting a daughter with Percy, but the child died a few days after a premature birth, without ever having received a name.

Mary and Percy married in 1816, after the suicide of his wife.

Shelley became the idol of the next two to three generations of poets (including Alfred Tennyson and William Butler Yeats), and was also appreciated by Karl Marx; after a wandering, tragic, and adventurous life, he died prematurely drowning at sea at around thirty years old. Ten days later, the sea returned his body to the beach in Viareggio, it was July 18, 1822.

When Mary fell into a deep depression that distanced her from Percy, he wrote these verses:

My dearest Mary, for what reason have you gone away,
And left me alone in this desolate world?

Your body is here in truth - a lovely body -
But you have fled, you have ventured down a desolate path
That leads to the darkest dwelling of Pain
Where even for your love I cannot follow you.

Will you return for me?
