This album, which explores new sounds for the band, opens with "The Song Remains The Same," immediately showcasing the level of technical mastery their sound achieved during this period as it shifts towards progressive rock while maintaining its power. The rhythmic fabric woven by Jones and Bonham is spectacular, with Page alternating delicate embellishments on both the 6-string and 12-string guitars with riffs that chase each other in dizzying ups and downs. Unfortunately, the voice seems to be stuck together with Scotch tape; the track is originally instrumental and should have remained so. "Rain Song" is a unique and unparalleled ballad that highlights why Page is one of the most respected guitarists (I've always been told by guitarist friends that he’s a study in his own right, because he is truly one of a kind), and in which Jones masterfully arranges with the symphony of strings on mellotron and piano spectacularly.
