After 5 long years, here come the Orange Goblin again. These four stinky Englishmen have reemerged with their "A Eulogy for the Damned," after a five-year silence that arose from the sands of "Healing Through Fire."

The new work by the Londoners should be taken for what it is: a solid stoner metal album, where what matters is the raw attitude, the riffing, and the no-frills atmosphere. From Orange Goblin one does not expect refinement, but only their dirty work. This CD proves it in full. Do not expect a change of course or a softening of sound from AEFTD. What our guys did in the past returns here unaltered.

The only missing element, therefore, is originality. For the rest, everything one asks of a platter of this type is there: roughness, power, aggressiveness. The perfect marriage of all these basic principles is already in the opening track "Red Tide Rising", which recalls the lost times of their early stoner days. A tremendously badass track, just like all the 10 tracks that make up the CD. The overall quality remains at medium-high levels and finds inspiration in the second half of the CD, in songs like "Death of Aquarius", "The Bishops Wolf", and "Return to Mars".

There’s no need to dwell on the compositional subtleties of Ben Ward and his flea-ridden partners in crime. "A Eulogy for the Damned" is a work of craft and substance and should be embraced with all the genre's clichés. You just need to appreciate its coarse nuances.
