Noel and Liam Gallagher must have a grudge against me, and I'll explain why: when they released "Definitely Maybe," I was quite intrigued and bought that album and the subsequent massively successful "What's the Story," but then I abandoned them, perhaps because they openly tried to draw inspiration from my legendary Fab Four. To me, this obsession of theirs was almost a declaration of lèse-majesté, so much so that I sold the two aforementioned CDs to buy others. After that, I never bought another album by the Gallagher brothers and followed them on TV and radio instead. The impression I had of them was that, despite being a band capable of writing great songs, it wasn't worth buying their CD, given the prices.
Recently, however, on Deb, the flattering reviews of "Dig Out Your Soul," with enthusiastic comments, and also some criticism, truth be told, encouraged me to buy it, and I liked it a lot and changed my mind. Now my son gave me the singles collection "Time Flies" for my birthday, where the singles released by the band over the years are gathered, and I must say that listening to all these historical pieces of the band together makes for an extremely pleasant album, even though the collection misses tracks like “Champagne Supernova” or “What's the Story” and also others. In short, I'm reassessing the opinion I had formed about them, as an overrated and cocky group, and I feel like delving deeper into their work, precisely on the basis of “Time Flies,” which, while essentially being a greatest hits collection, which I consider useful only if one wants to get an idea of a band's music without spending a fortune, and especially after having listened well to “Dig Out Your Soul,” which is really a great album, in my opinion.
In short, I’m sorry that these two idiots have decided to split up just now that I was starting to like them; hence the irritation, and they will likely be missed in their homeland as well, at least judging by the people present at their last concert, prominently featured on the cover of “Time Flies.” As a fanatic of the Beatles, there's one thing I feel I can say: many bands over the years have been compared to the Beatles, often wrongly: The Oasis are the band that, in my opinion, comes closest to them in terms of innate ability to create beautiful melodies and were the only ones to have created a movement in England similar to Beatlemania. It's clear that even for me the Beatles remain on another plane, unreachable for everyone, not just by them.
This album may be useful for those who don't know them to discover them, or for me, for example, to rediscover them and be pleasantly surprised. I know many will disagree because from their point of view, they appreciate a different type of music or because they embody the essence of the most negative aspects of a rock band, but maybe it's the advancing age, maybe my musical tastes are becoming more frivolous, anyway, I really like this collection and quite a bit. I believe I'll buy their entire discography again. More than a review, it’s a confession, forgive me. Now, I'm going home to the sea: write whatever you want, I can't reply to you eehehehehehee.
