Nucleus & Ian Carr

Musical Group or Musician

Nucleus was a British progressive jazz-rock ensemble led by trumpeter Ian Carr. Carr conceived Nucleus as an interchangeable, fluid ensemble; the group has strong ties to the Canterbury-related circle and produced albums such as Elastic Rock, Belladonna and Labyrinth.

Ian Carr (1933–2009) was a Scottish jazz trumpeter, composer and writer. Nucleus emerged around 1970 as a leading UK jazz-rock/fusion group; Belladonna and Labyrinth are noted in DeBaser reviews for refined arrangements and large-scale composition.

Two DeBaser reviews praise Ian Carr's leadership of Nucleus and the band's sophisticated progressive jazz-rock. Belladonna is described as refined and atmospheric; Labyrinth as a radiant, large-scale suite. Reviewers highlight top-line musicianship and Canterbury-scene connections.

For:Listeners of progressive jazz-rock, fans of the Canterbury scene, advanced jazz listeners

Ian Carr on trumpet has now left behind the last residues of Davis-like imitation, and his often sharp and fragmented textures form the guiding pivot for an exceptional array of instrumentalists: from bassist Roy Babbington (Soft Machine), to keyboardist Dave McRae (Matching Mole), to saxophonist Brian Smith (the only surviving original Nucleus member), to trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, to pianist Gordon Beck, to singer Norma Winstone and others.

It is an album with soft atmospheres, at times almost ambient, suitable for listening on a cold rainy day, in an armchair, with a book in one hand and a cup of tea in the other, in perfect British Oldstyle.
