In 1989, Grant Hart, once having released the debut album "Intolerance," formed a new band, Nova Mob, named after a character in William S. Burroughs' book Nova Express. The only other constant member of the group would be bassist Tom Merkl, while many drummers would alternate; eventually, Hart himself, who had reserved the roles of singer and rhythm guitarist for himself, would take his place behind the drums. After releasing the EP Admiral of The Sea, the band released the concept album The Last Days Of Pompeii. The album presents an intriguing story with references to various historical empires and their collapse over time; while the tracks themselves are pleasant, few reach great heights. The main issue is the production, which does not do justice to Hart's writing, a problem resolved with the 2012 reissue, featuring not only a new remix but also alternate versions of the original tracks and a new cover. As in all his solo records, what convinces me the most is his voice. The narrative flows quickly, with several memorable tracks like Admiral of The Sea, present here in two versions, Werner Von Braun, and Getaway in Time. However, the rest feels incomplete. At the time, I forced myself to like it, although I couldn't hide the disappointment after the excellent solo debut. He partly redeemed himself with the subsequent release.
