They called them the Pixies from across the Alps. They were quite talented. The great album from 1992 named Tostaky with epic songs like "Ici Paris," "oublié," and "Marléne." Ten years later comes this product, halfway between the tradition of French Chansonierres and Manu Chao. An incomprehensible choice, just as inexplicable is the insistence with which radio stations play the hit single "Le vent nous portera," featuring the former singer of Mano Negra. Bertrand Cantat and company have produced this rather questionable album, rich with sounds from the Gypsy tradition such as the harmonica and accordion, lovingly present in French folk music. Then suddenly, a post-punk track to remind us of their past. And then back down again, in this bad atmosphere like a storyteller on his last attempt to clear the bar. A poor product, far from their best ideas. I recommend the old albums or directly Charles Aznavour. This mix is neither fish nor fowl.
It’s a superlative concentration of French ethnic rock punk sounds, sadness, and anger towards the political world in general.
L'Europe, a magnificent piece that despite its 20 minutes never becomes boring but rather with its frenetic rhythm changes is irresistible!
"The entire album is infused with a dark, desolate, stagnant atmosphere of anger and melancholy."
"'L’Europe' is a true act of mockery against Europe; 24 minutes of bitter reflections...urgent and passionate, distressing and epic."
