Well-known American rock guitarist (b. 1952 USA) also known for his various collaborations with N. Young ('70) and B. Springsteen ('80). From a very young age, he studied the accordion and later, at fifteen, the guitar, eventually becoming a virtuoso of the instrument. He draws inspiration from the Beatles, Presley, and Keith Richard. He also formed his own band, Grin (four albums released). Possessing a good technique and a convincing guitar touch. N. Young noticed him and decided to bring him into Crazy Horse ('70) and also to accompany him in "After The Goldrush." However, Lofgren did not abandon Grin and subsequently let his brother Tom join the band as a guitarist. Determined to pursue a solo career, he dissolved Grin in 1973.
The current "Cry Tough" shows Lofgren in great shape, with well-crafted and original tracks. In some songs, Lofgren sings, plays piano, organ, and other instruments, demonstrating himself as a decent multi-instrumentalist. Nine pieces of undeniable artistic and technical value. For this review, I will describe a few.
The title track is very solid, with well-calibrated and well-constructed solos and an especially agile drum. "It's Not A Crime" is a refined song sung by Lofgren with orchestral arrangement by Dominic Frontiere and Al Kooper. "For Your Love" is stunning and as soon as you hear it, it immediately touches your heart. Remarkable is the guitar-drum "race" in the track with a very fine guitar solo. An unforgettable piece. "Share A Little" is a convincing rock-blues track with Nils' excellent guitar, measured and almost never showy. With the song "Can't Get Closer (WCGC)" it's hard not to be struck by its simple and immediate melody.
In conclusion, an excellent album, rather sophisticated and refined instrumentally, with a gentle and never exaggerated rock-blues. Special mention must be made for the decent cover (score 3.1 recurring), so to speak, rather "hazy".
"...Dr. Feelgood, i promised this lady if i can't dance, she's gonna break my nose- He said:"Easy now, boy, 'cause, i got the antidote"- "Cry Tough-throw that girl on the floor Help her up and Watch her beg for more Cry Tough-pull down your soul You just need another shot of Rock N' Roll..."

06 Mud in Your Eye (02:44)
You used to leave your scent
On his whiskey soaked collar
You both would paint the town
Drink up his very last dollar
And then you loved him for fun
And rode away when it was done
Now he's confused and I know why
Ain't that mud in your eye
Ain't like rain
Remember lively little Richard.
But his men were painting town
You were in need of attention
So he thought he'd take you on down
And there you first saw me
And realized you were no longer free
Cuz true love good girls can't deny
It comes and goes like mud in you're eye.
Sometimes a victim can run
But not when both have been 'von
And I ain't no stranger
I built you up to shoot you down
Once you could thrill me
Now I'm the jury
And you'll be a cinch to convict
Your boy's gonna make the great escape
While your laid bare on the ground
This vengeance had to and in crime
I built you up and shoot you down
You know I'm not usually that kind
But you didn't know he was a brother of mine
But I'll just laugh if you cry
Now ain't that mud in your eye
