Another great album by the Canadian rockers Nickelback. After the success of their previous albums "Silver Side Up" and "The Long Road," here comes another album worthy of their name.
But this time it is not an album of a purely hard rock mold; numerous songs on the album showcase the band's more melodic and commercial side and present themselves as a perfect calling card for radio and MTV. Let's say this is an album with two faces capable of thrilling both rock enthusiasts and the more romantic ones.
Among the harder tracks, we remember for example a rhythmic "Follow You Home" opening the CD, "Fight For All The Wrong Reasons," with one of the most beautiful guitar passages ever heard personally, the lively "Animals" and the extreme "Side Of A Bullet" with strong references to the thrash of Metallica and Pantera (not surprisingly, the song is dedicated to Dimebag Darrell); on the more pop-rock side, we are faced with songs like a sensitive "Photograph," the incredibly moving "Savin' Me," an acoustic "Far Away" and a dreamy "If Everyone Cared." Less convincing but still beautiful "Next Contestant," another song that keeps them firmly clinging to their style, the fast "Someone That You're With," and "Rockstar," another predominantly acoustic and commercially minded track with some slight country-rock inflections. And it is precisely this continuous stylistic variation between one track and the next that makes the album enjoyable and does not bore the listener.
A definitely very spot-on choice; maybe we’re a step below "The Long Road," but the album is still worthy of bearing the Nickelback signature.
"The most unfortunate track of the album, 'Photograph'... too cheesy, and tiresome by the third listen."
"Nickelback’s most frequent mistake is promoting albums with singles that are too commercial and banal, overshadowing the album’s excellent pieces."
Daniel Adair has brought a breath of fresh rock air and the possibility of an additional vocal line to further harmonize the sung parts.
"Side of a Bullet" boasts a prestigious recording by Dimebag Darrell, a touching tribute to the late Pantera guitarist.
"Too many tracks are overly radio-friendly, and that’s not really the style of the old Nickelback."
"If Everyone Cared, Someone That You’re With and Rockstar are a ball and chain, for the first time you can’t wait for a Nickelback CD to end."
