Probably, technically, this is the ugliest movie ever played by Nicolas Cage. So poorly made that it makes "Con-Air" seem almost a masterpiece.
Watching this USA remake shows how easy it is to ruin a compelling story capable of keeping the audience in suspense.
The overall acting performance appears as poor as it is bizarre, frequently ruining the potential thrilling effect. The direction seems nonexistent, and the screenplay seems written by a talentless 13-year-old video enthusiast.
Despite all this, the final effect is anything but boring. The absurdity of some scenes, terribly acted, combined with a poorly done Italian dubbing (so much that it appears intentional at times), makes this mess a "cult of the cult". An almost comic horror.
Essentially, what's presented is a laughing stock (Nicolas Cage) who is mocked by a cult of island housewives for entire days, in a particularly crude manner. How can one forget the scene of the procession where good old Cage blends in disguised as a bear, so as not to stand out among the murderous housewives, only to later see him running away into the woods in a shirt, tie, and hairy feet (he forgot to remove them along with the rest of the costume).
Or the final line, which I obviously won't transcribe to avoid spoiling the extremely predictable ending, worthy of a Vanzina film. And much more.
Personally, I will buy the DVD as soon as possible, not out of masochism, but to get a good laugh.
