In the second half of the nineties, Napalm Death's musical career took a path marked by greater musical exploration; an experimentation that saw them add new sounds to their usual Grindcore, sounds that were entirely unknown, or almost, to the English band until then. To all of this is added a greater awareness of their capabilities, even in terms of writing individual songs, and a production by their historic label "Earache Records" finally worthy of note. In this regard, it is worth mentioning the presence of Colin Richardson in the production booth, one of the most representative producers of the entire extreme scene for decades.
"Breed To Breathe" is an EP released in November 1997, just three months after the album "Inside The Torn Apart"; the recording sessions for both works were the same. Two mirror products that further demonstrate the English band's value and undisputed dominance over its direct competition. After all, they were among the inventors of Grindcore and today, nearly thirty years after the release of the epochal "Scum," they are still a well-oiled war machine on stage that knows no obstacles.
The beginning of the short record is entrusted to the title track; a solid example of what the stylistic evolution undertaken by the group is, where Danny's syncopated drumming supports Mark's unmistakable growl vocals, and Pintado-Harris's dual guitars weave aseptic, cold patterns, even touching industrial edges. Mark's voice becomes clean and clear for a few seconds, as it has been heard on only a few other occasions in the past; a song that always triggers a wild mosh pit live (I invite anyone to experience such a thrill). The listening continues with "All Intensive Purposes," a mid-tempo with imposing moves, featuring stopped and repeated guitar sounds that create a sort of circular motion of the sound; a track that in its intricate development seems to be on the verge of exploding at any moment, creating an enforced anticipation for something that will not happen.
Third track and third blow: "Bled Dry" continues in the vein of the two tracks already described, always with that massive use of slowed-down parts, instrumentally much more elaborate. Until the final devastating explosion that happens this time: it is always the drum, launched at full speed, that gives way to the last part of the track, fully entering Grindcore territories. And when Napalm Death step on the accelerator, they are second to none; a track among my favorites in their enormous discography.
The swift listening, lasting just over twenty minutes, concludes with a gem: the cover of "Suffer The Children," a track by the same Napalm Death, played by the German band Fatality, who emerged as the winners of a competition featuring several young and emerging groups tackling tracks by the English masters. A very raw demo version, with rather poor recording, of one of the most famous Napalm Death tracks.
In conclusion, an excellent record that well represents this experimental phase of the group; a phase that would last for a couple more years until the new millennium. From 2000 onwards, their career would continue, returning to the main road of uncompromising Grindcore; the new record released in early 2015, "Apex Predator - Easy Meat," is another devastating example of their incomparable greatness.

Lyrics : Shane Embury / Music : Mitch Harris , Shane Embury All this pain is a hate disease, intravened into my heart. Bittersweet emotional fall choking dry the lifeline strong ? A time stretched farce. Who do we fool ? Salacious thoughts pulling at strings. Intake decay, the vision burns. Intake decay, stranger now. Feed on the lie that kept it strong. Do we confess ? Admit our worth. I drown myself in my fears insecure, How can I trust passing time reassure ? There's no more me. I drown myself in my fears insecure, How can I trust passing time reassure ? Reclusive me, instigate, fence off blows. Forced to admit - Realise how it goes. There's no more me.
