Nowadays, it's not as easy as it might seem to find records capable of conveying such an abyssal darkness. But here we are faced with the sound of every despair, fear, and anguish. We are faced with the latest work by My Dying Bride.
In my opinion, never before has the band managed to convey such dark and claustrophobic atmospheres as with this album.
The tracks are, as always, long and extremely slow, starting with the opener THE WRECKAGE OF MY FLESH. Every single note, in fact, is like a stabbing pain in the stomach for its heaviness, obsessiveness, and despair. The tracks are also accompanied by excellent keyboard work that creates phenomenal interludes, as in THE SCARLET GARDEN.
Aaron confirms himself as an extraordinary singer capable of moving from a heart-wrenching and lamenting singing to authentic explosions of anger, as in CATHERINE BLAKE and THE PRIZE OF BEAUTY — in my opinion, some of the most beautiful songs ever composed by the English group.
As always, the lyrics are beautiful, among which stand out MY WINE IN SILENCE and especially the dark legend told in THE BLUE LOTUS.
Terrifying, on the other hand, is AND MY FURY STANDS READY, perhaps the darkest and most unsettling track on the entire album, representing one of its most evident peaks.
The last track A DOOMED LOVER is the epitaph of all hope; amidst the abyssal sound of the bass and the guitar melodies that perfectly blend in the track until they become real and piercing screams of pain, Aaron recites with resignation the last desperate words of weak light from these songs of the deepest darkness.
Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light clearly expresses this chronic lack of ideas.
Unfortunately, the Bride preferred to tread the usual ground, and this choice, in the long run, has proven to be unconvincing.
