The Profile

Muhal Richard Abrams (1930–2017) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader from Chicago. He co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in 1965 and became a central figure of the avant‑garde and free-jazz movements. His debut album, Levels and Degrees of Light, features Anthony Braxton’s first official recording.

Elected AACM president in 1965; co-founder of the AACM; pianist who also played clarinet and cello; on Levels and Degrees of Light he worked with Anthony Braxton (first official recording), Maurice McIntyre, Leroy Jenkins, Gordon Emmanuel, with vocals by Penelope Taylor and a poem by David Moore.

One spirited review dives into Levels and Degrees of Light, highlighting Abrams’s AACM leadership and the Chicago avant-garde. It notes Anthony Braxton’s first official recording, vocal and poetry elements, and a storm of free-jazz energy. Strong recommendation for listeners into the wilder side of jazz.
