THE REVIEW

Take a Norwegian with a past in Emperor (genre lovers might correct me: at least I think so), dress him up as a troll, give him electronic music gadgets, and you get Mortiis.

The Smell Of Rain is his latest album, very different from his previous works, more guitars, drums, and a damsel (hopefully not as ugly as him) who accompanies him in singing. The CD is a mix of '80s sounds with dark and medieval-like tones (bear with me on the adjective): in short, to give you an idea, it sounds like Depeche (ahhh! blasphemy) with Manson on vocals and a Doctor and the Medics style to make fun of themselves/ourselves.
The only songs that amuse me are Parasite God and Mental Maelstrom, for the rest, this dark-dj's album (apparently his concerts are similar to raves) leaves me perplexed and with a question: but what won't people do to earn a living?

Surely some of you will love it and call me a fool, but I just can't understand how one can spend about 1 hour (that's the length of the CD) without getting bored and tossing it away.
I recommend it to those who want to listen to something gothic metal without the metal (which, by the way, is annoying).

Bye everyone!

The reviewer critically explores Mortiis' album The Smell Of Rain, noting its departure from his earlier works. Mixing '80s sounds with dark gothic elements and electronic music, the album features more guitars and drums along with a female guest vocalist. While a couple of songs stand out, the overall impression is one of boredom and perplexity. The reviewer suggests it might appeal to those seeking gothic metal without metal.

02   Flux / Mental Maelstrom (06:48)

03   Spirit in a Vacuum (04:56)

04   Monolith (04:01)

Go away from me.
I just want to flee.
The god i used to be.
Fill me no more with glee.

Where am I now?
Upon whom to bestow,
The Secrets locked inside.
The universe I hide.

The Monolith is I.
It was always me.
This world has always been,
The place I really lived in.

Here i stand, alone.
My soul has turned to stone.
Half my kingdom to,
Him that helps me through.

05   You Put a Hex on Me (05:47)

06   Everyone Leaves (06:43)

07   Marshland (04:45)

08   Antimental (06:19)

The marshland that is down and deep,
Holds me tight it's clutching me.
Like black cold chains forever,
Dragging me towards hell's misery.

The things that I've seen with Your eyes.
The things that You choose not to see.
Have scorched me like ten thousand burning years.
In a purgatory.

Is this Damnation?

Is it in my mind or is it something I don't know.
Something that I should control,
I've got to find,
Find the machine.
That makes me want to be me.

Cannot face another mirror,
Cannot face another truth.
I've got to find,
Find some new eyes,
I've got to find a substitute.

My omnipresence this is me.
My weapon against your dynasty.

I've got to stop existing mentally,
In places that i do not want to be.
I hvae to move away,
From thoughts terrible and gray.
It will not let me go,
is this Damnation?

My Omnipresence this is me.
My friend, turns into an enemy.

Must control, I must control the evil daemon.
Antimental!

Mortiis' courage in releasing this album is commendable, different from his previous ones (I personally appreciated it a lot).

If you liked it, continue listening; if not, give it another chance.
