South African singer and civil rights activist, widely known as "Mama Africa".

Born 4 March 1932, died 9 November 2008. She was a prominent South African singer and activist who brought African music to international audiences and opposed apartheid, which led to her long exile from South Africa.

A short, warm review of Miriam Makeba's Eyes On Tomorrow praising its easy-listening, joyful character and highlighting the duet with Dizzy Gillespie on Paolo Conte's "Don't Break My Heart". The review recommends the album as relaxing and evocative of Africa. Useful to listeners of world and Afro-jazz music.

For:Fans of world music, listeners interested in African vocalists and politically engaged musicians.

Miriam Makeba brought the sounds of her land around the world, and she did so until the end, singing of peace and hope, denouncing apartheid and racial discrimination, and singing even carefree and joyful notes as only in Africa they know how to.
