Aside from industry insiders, Mink DeVille (Villy Deville) is a little-known artist, yet he is a great songwriter. An artist capable of combining the most genuine Rock with folk, creating delightful and original compositions.
One of the masters in the art of composition, listen to "Spanish Stroll", "Cadillac Walk", "Mazurka", "This Must Be The Night", and you will easily agree with me. I have never found him in any rankings, from Scaruffi to il Cibicida, who prefer Black Sabbath, Beck, Queen, Radiohead, Brian Eno, or Peter Gabriel, who in my opinion are among the most overrated artists of the last 30 years. Sure, tastes cannot be disputed, but for the authors of these rankings, it seems that Rock was born about twenty years ago, and the founding fathers, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, the great Willie Dixon, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins, Eddie Cochran, (the first Punk) are nowhere to be found.
If you want to have the measure of a musician's skill, the best way is to listen to them live, so I return to DeVille, only adding that his concert is a real treat. I have seen live performances, and his is among the best.
