THE REVIEW

It's the band's third album; unfortunately, the last one.

More lineup changes, another musical shift. This time, the pace is drastically slowed down, gravitating towards heavy, claustrophobic Heavy-Doom sounds. Like Sabbath in slow motion, with Patrick Dubar's voice landing halfway between Ozzy and Chris Cornell. The production, raw and closed-off (due to a ridiculous budget), doesn't help and makes listening to the whole work a burdensome, at times insurmountable, experience.

It feels like hearing just one track because the construction of the individual songs is similar. The guitars bite, hit hard; the rhythm section is thick, sludgy. At times, even the vocals take on muddled, weary movements, as if Patrick wanted to wrap things up quickly, close the album and even the Mind Funk's career. There are a few rare softer moments, with less harsh sounds and the presence of a few acoustic notes.

For the rest, we are in complete shadow, under a leaden, blackish sky. "Weird Water" is the only definite nod to the past, to the Psycho-Stoner of the previous Dropped.

Over the years, I have managed to appreciate this dark swan song of one of the most underrated and ill-fated bands of the nineties.

Summary by Bot

Mind Funk's third and last album slows the pace toward heavy, claustrophobic heavy-doom with raw, dense production. The slow, sludgy sound is reminiscent of Sabbath and features Patrick Dubar's unique vocals. Despite a challenging listening experience, the album stands as a dark swan song of a once-underrated 90s band. Sporadic softer moments provide brief relief amidst the overall heavy atmosphere.

Mind Funk

Mind Funk were an American heavy/alt/funk metal band formed in New Jersey in 1989. Initially named Mind Fuck, they changed to Mind Funk upon signing with Epic. Featuring Pat Dubar, Louis Svitek, John Monte, and Reed St. Mark, they released three albums—Mind Funk (1991), Dropped (1993), and People Who Fell From The Sky (1995)—before disbanding in the mid-1990s.
